Close encounters of the material kind…

Come to a late night consultation at Medical Museion, and get closer than ever before to objects from the unique historical collections, ranging from amputation saws to human specimens. Encounter mysterious objects from cutting edge medical research laboratories, and explore the devices that are changing the way we live with disease and disability. Meet scientists, artists, and philosophers all trying to make sense of the body and how we manage, treat, and change it. More than a lecture, beyond a tour… Immerse yourself in the stuff of medicine at a new evening event series. Read more about the series below.

Tickets are now on sale from Politiken Billet, for 50 kr including a drink.

Making Balanced Bodies: From Leeches to Pills

Thursday March 22nd 2012, 7.30pm (event in Danish)

Meet doctors from the past and present, who will examine some famous patients and suggest treatments for what ails them. Each will demonstrate the drugs, devices, and tools they use to treat imbalanced bodies and minds, bringing some of the intriguing objects from the exhibition ‘Balance and Metabolism’ out of their cases. Enjoy a drink, and pose your own health questions to the panel…

Look Again… Exploring Medical Objects through Art

Thursday April 26th 2012, 7.30pm (event in English)

In this interactive event we invite you to join artists in using drawing, photography, and other lenses to look again – to uncover the beauty of everyday medical things. The hands-on workshop will be followed by a discussion with the artists, over some beautiful refreshments.

A Genetic Crystal Ball? Turning Spit into Data

Thursday May 24th 2012, 7.30pm

Genetics is big business, but you can also pay privately to have your own genome sequenced, and even printed out as a picture for your wall. Come and meet genomic scientists, and find out how samples of blood and saliva travel around the world, and end up as predictions for health and disease. Handle a fragile gene chip and ponder what you’d want to know about your future…

Coming soon.

With this experimental event series, we are trying to:

• Open up the glass cases of the museum and laboratory, and let the objects out…

• Bring the weird past, the opaque present, and ambivalent future of medicine together.

• Explore medical science as part of our culture, sensation, and everyday speech.

• Unwrap medical science in the making – finding not finished facts but evolving knowledge.

• Matchmake curators, researchers, publics, scientists, artists, doctors, and patients.
