Experiences of Ageing
“Where Rollators Gather”
“This pencil and charcoal drawing took three months to complete and unlike my other drawings, it was not based in direct observation. The composition was based on a series of photographs I took in the area of Ryparken in Copenhagen and from these I made a composite comprising 12 rollators. The drawing is meant to capture the sense of the rollators ‘hanging out’ on a street corner. In this neighbourhood they are prolific and rather than be objects that invoke sadness or scorn or just being overlooked and invisible, in this drawing they are expressive and cheeky. The great number ‘gathering’ also reflects on the fact that as an ageing population we are going to have to get used to seeing more and more rollators and assistive devices around our streets.”
