We humans are forever searching for new knowledge about ourselves. How can we treat diseases? How does the body work? How can we cure our ailments? To develop new medicines and gain a better understanding of human physiology, we often turn to the animal world for answers. This season of Evening Consultations explores what animals can teach us about the human body, health, and medicine.
We take you inside the researchers’ laboratories to explore how animals, from ants to large marine mammals, can help us better understand ourselves. What do monkey testicles have to do with declining sperm quality in men? Can mole fat and burnt viper really cure diseases and other ailments? Can a fish make the human heart beat in sync? Can ants help solve the problem of antibiotic resistance? Can a whale be CT-scanned to teach us more about the human body’s healing processes?
These are just some of the questions we’ll explore during this autumn’s Evening Consultations.
Evening Consultation: From Animal to Human
29. October, 2026, 19:00 – 21.00
This Evening Consultation explores our genetic relationship with animals. Which diseases and ailments do humans and animals share? Why do different species develop some of the same diseases? And how can a small, colourful fish help lead to breakthroughs in medical research?
Evening Consultation: Mole Fat and Monkey Testicles – Can Animals Cure Humans?
4. November, 2026, 19:00 – 21.00
From beaver secretions for treating rheumatism to mice baked in pastry to cure bedwetting. Humans have used animals to treat ailments throughout history. At this Evening Consultation, we’ll explore the use of animals in folk medicine before taking a look inside the laboratory, where cutting-edge research on monkey testicles is investigating the problem of declining male fertility.
Evening Consultation: From Ant to Whale – Antibiotic Resistance and the Human Body’s Healing Processes
19. November, 2026, 19:00 – 21.00
This Evening Consultation explores how animals can help us develop new medicines and better understand the human body. Can ants hold the key to developing new antibiotics, and can marine mammals help us understand how the body heals? To understand ourselves, we need to learn more about animals.
About Evening Consultations
Evening Consultations at the Medical Museion is a lecture series where experts and researchers examine and take the pulse of the health sciences – past, present, and future. Evening Consultations is recommended for the incurably curious, looking for a little contagion to spark reflection.
The Evening Consultations take place in the 1787 auditorium, originally built as the Royal Academy of Surgery. After the consultation, we recommend enjoying a glass of bubbly and taking a stroll through the museum’s exhibitions.
Remember that a Hypochondriac Ticket for all three events can be purchased at a healing discount.
