As part of her Velux professorship in Copenhagen in September and October 2014, Professor Annemarie Mol will be offering a series of master classes on ‘Material semiotic explorations’ in conjunction with the University of Copenhagen’s Center for Health and Society (Center for Sundhed og Samfund – CSS). Below is information on the master classes and how to apply, which I’m posting on behalf of researcher Bodil Just Christensen.

The master class format will provide a unique opportunity for jointly exploring how empirical projects and the theoretical framework of material semiotics may be developed together. In a series of five classes, young researchers are invited to present their own work for collective discussion. The setup will make it possible for the participants to connect across disciplines and institutions and to create a forum for future collaborations.

Early stage researchers (3rd year PhDs, post docs, associate professors, etc.) are invited to participate. Each participant is expected to do some preliminary reading, attend all five classes, submit a paper for discussion and read and comment on the papers of the other participants. The submitted papers do not have to be written for the purpose but may be article drafts, project presentations, conference papers, etc. Work in progress is welcome. The master class is free of charge, but the number of participants will be limited to 12-15. We seek to form a coherent enough group. If you would like to join, please send in a one-page application, containing your disciplinary background, institutional affiliation, current research project(s) and an indication of your analytical and/or empirical queries and concerns.

Application: Deadline for applications: August 29th 2014 (email bjuc@ifro.ku.dk with ‘master class’ in subject line). Decisions will be made by September 5th.

Master class sessions: Fridays September 19 & 26; October 3, 10 & 17 from 13.00 – 15.30, preceded by a 12.30 lunch.

Venue: University of Copenhagen, Center for Health and Society (Center for Sundhed og Samfund – CSS), Øster Farimagsgade 5, 1353 Copenhagen K. Room to be announced.

Puzzle: What is a good feature image for a blog post about ‘material semiotics’? Google images is a funny kind of answer, and coming in at only number 13 on the relevance metrics was, you guessed it, a cat…
