Cookies are small pieces of information stored by a website on the users own computer. For example, if a users selects to view a website in a specific language, the website will store this information in a cookie. Next time the user visits the site the language selection will be remebered.

Another very current example of the use of cookies is visitor statistics. To be able to e.g. determine if a user is visiting a specific site for the first time or is a returning visitor, this information would be stored in a cookie. Google Analytics is a very popular statistics tool that uses cookie for this purpose and others.
