Culture Night 2025

Medicinsk Museion Shows Teeth

Gold teeth, dentures, and shiny grillz – with a string of talks and workshops, Medicinsk Museion takes a close look at teeth. As a special treat, you can explore the museum’s impressive dental collection under the roof this evening. In the historic auditorium from 1787, you can hear about famous teeth and learn how teeth are connected to the health of the whole body. Try your hand at dentistry and get up close to historic objects with the museum’s skilled conservators. The cultural and historical significance of teeth is also highlighted in the special exhibition TEETH. It’s a Cultural Night with bite!

Program: 6:00 PM – 11:59 PM

Talk: The Mouth and the Body – Old Theories, New Questions

Historically, teeth were often considered separate from the rest of the body. But research shows that diseases in the mouth can affect the heart, lungs, and nerves. In this talk, researcher Nanna Katrine Lüders Kaalund tells the story of the mouth’s role in overall health. This talk is in Danish at 7:30 PM and in English at 9:00 PM.

Talk: Struensee’s Tooth – From Mouth to Museum

An executed royal physician, a loose tooth, and a museum. Join museum curator Anne Bernth Jensen on a hunt for the truth behind Denmark’s perhaps most mysterious tooth: Struensee’s tooth. The canine of the royal physician and controversial 18th-century figure is on display at the museum. But how did it get there, and is it even really Struensee’s? This talk is in Danish at 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM.

Family Activity: Dental School

Molars, incisors, and canines need to be put in place when the Dental School from the University of Copenhagen moves into Medicinsk Museion. Spend an evening at dental school: take a closer look at a tooth under a microscope and learn about the microscopic life in the mouth. Cure your fear of the dentist by drilling and making fillings yourself – in a plaster tooth. 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

Visit the Dental Collection

As a special treat, the museum opens its beautiful dental collection, usually closed to the public. With over 5,000 objects – from dental chairs and instruments to braces and prosthetics from various periods – you can get up close to the history of dentistry. Guests are admitted in small groups (first-come, first-served). 6:15, 6:30, 6:45, 9:30, 9:45, 10:00, 10:15, 10:30, 11:00 PM.

Get Up Close with the Collection

This year, the museum’s curators have again hunted for exciting objects and stories in the large medical history collection. See how animal teeth have been used to treat, beautify, and protect the human body – all up close. Open collection: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM, with a conservator pop-up 8:00 – 9:30 PM.
