Researchers and social media – an informal survey

A couple of weeks ago I was playing around with the idea of setting up a forum for our researchers to discuss and share ideas on communicating their science. My initial instict was to use Facebook, mostly because it seems to be the preferred social platform in Denmark in general. But is it the preferred platform amongst biomedical researchers – and specifically in our center?
I decided to make a quick survey amongst my colleagues. I sent out an email (to a total of 236 people) with a link to a simple Google form with the following request:
Please indicate which social media platforms you are familiar with and/or use – privately and/or professionally
The form then listed a matrix of 22 different platforms (you know, just off the top of my head) and the options
[su_list]

  • Use professionally
  • Use privately
  • Use both privately and professionally
  • Am familiar with, but don’t use
  • Don’t know

[/su_list]
I expected perhaps a handful of responses, but to my surprise I received 60 responses (25% of the people who received the survey) and half responded within 1 hour! The results on the other hand are perhaps not that surprising:
[su_list]

  • Nearly everyone (90%) is on Facebook
  • Other popular platforms include: Youtube (88%), LinkedIn (87%), ResearchGate (45%), Google+ (40%)
  • Platforms that are used almost exclusively privately or professionally: Instagram, LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Mendeley

[/su_list]
So I guess I will have to decide between setting up a group on Facebook or LinkedIn – or?
What are your experiences? Do these numbers fit the picture in your world?
(updated 20 Nov 2014: added number of potential respondents)
