Medical practices are in various ways based on visual technologies. This opens up questions such as:
How does learning processes take place when medical staff learns how to use various visualization technologies? What impact does visualizations have for understanding the body? And are there emancipatory potentials in medical visualizations, seen from the perspective of the patient?
At the workshop: Visualizations: Making the body visible in gynaecological practices, on the 21’st of November, these and more questions will be addressed and discussed. The purpose of this workshop is from a feminist perspective, to discuss different aspects of learning and knowledge practices in the use of visualization technologies. During the workshop it is hoped to develop a fruitful dialogue between different disciplinary perspectives from medical staff with clinical perspectives, to science and technology studies.
The invited guest speaker is Lisa Cartwright, Ph.D. Professor of Communication and Science Studies, UC San Diego.
Professor Cartwright will present two papers, in the first paper Cartwright discusses magnetic resonance spine and brain imaging based on a project on science and visualisation she has done jointly with her collegue Morana Alac and which will soon appear in an anthology published by Routledge. The second paper on pre-natal imaging discusses the turn both toward and away from “realist” representation in the range of visual techniques used in prenatal screening and diagnosis, and the relationship between photographic realism and realism in fetal imaging. In both her papers Professor Cartwright engages in discussions from feminist science studies and feminist visual studies.
We also invite other interested clinicians/researchers to send in abstracts to give a shorter paper. Please send an abstract of 250 words to linsa@tema.liu.se, before November 12’th.
