The ambiguities and tensions of living and remains

Medical historians and medical curators will have an excellent opportunity to refill their conceptual apparatuses if they attend the third annual Midwest Interdisciplinary Graduate Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 15-17 February 2008. The organisers want the participants to think about the relationships between ‘living’ and ‘remains’:

Annebeth Meldal’s hospital wet-art at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology, Oslo

I’ve just seen “God bedring” (Get well soon!) at the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology (NTM) in Oslo — a nice and pretty object-dense temporary exhibition about different aspects of 18th and 19th century Norwegian hospital life. (I’ll be back with a review of it when the catalogue is being published in a few weeks). One showcase is […]

Workshop on writing the history of psychiatry after 1945

Postwar historiography of psychiatry is much less developed than the contemporary history of laboratory medicine. This lacuna will hopefully be remedied by a workshop to be held at the Université libre de Bruxelles, 30-31 May 2008:

Faces and attention in the Biomedicine and Aesthetics in a Museum Context workshop, Copenhagen

Eventually, here are some pictures taken during the workshop. Some of the workshop participants watching our new exhibition, Oldetopia, in the making: Sharon MacDonald (left) and Calum Storrie (right): Jan Eric Olsén (left) and Martha Fleming (right) (co-organisers of the meeting): Wolfgang Knapp and Richard Wingate (right) discussing something; Cornelius Borck (left) making a point: […]

Pictures from the conference Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body, Monday 3 September

And here’s some pictures of the speakers at the conference Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body, held last Monday (read abstracts of their talks here): Richard Wingate (left) explaining brain cell iconography and Ben Fry (right) answering a question about data visualisation:

Bodies of Evidence: Fat Across Disciplines

CRASSH and Newnham College in Cambridge are organising a conference on the theme ‘Bodies of Evidence: Fat Across Disciplines’ 19-20 September 2007. The current fascination with obesity poses many interesting problems. Not least of which remains a question of definition: What is obesity? The obese body is on the one hand regarded to be somewhat […]

Art and Biomedicine in Copenhagen: Five days of intense meetings

This blog has been silent for almost a week — because of the Art and Biomedicine meetings and events here in Copenhagen. Thursday 30 August through Saturday 1 September we had some 30 scholars around the meeting table at the Museum of Art and Design discussing biomedicine and aesthetics in a museum context. (pics added here) On Sunday night, […]

Bioartists as moral arbiters in biosociety?

The Arts & Genomics Centre at Leiden University is announcing three-month bioartist-in-residence positions as part of a larger research programme called ‘Imagining Genomics: Introducing Visuality in the Genomics Debate’ which focusus on “the role of visual art in moral debates on genomics”. The results of the bioart-in-residence projects are planned to be displayed in the Dutch National Museum of Natural History, Naturalis. The […]

Sound art work ‘Labyrinthitis’ by Jacob Kirkegaard, Medical Museion, Sunday 2 September

In connection with the conference ‘Art and Biomedicine: Beyond the Body’ held Monday 3 September, Medical Museion has commissioned sound artist Jacob Kirkegaard to create a new work. Jacob Kirkegaard has turned his listening ear inwards – to his own ear. By using specially developed listening equipment, he has captured the microactivity which the hair cells of the ear send […]

Friendship in science

Plato and Aristotle did it, Cicero did it, and many other classical authors too. Montaigne wrote a long essay on it, and Henry David Thoreau a whole book. Friendship is one of the perennial topics in the history of philosophical thought. Some sociologists say that friendship relations have perhaps never been as strong as they are today, when […]
