Cross-fertilisation between sci comm and STS

The Canadian Journal of Communication is planning a special issue on possible cross-fertilisations between communication studies and science and technology studies (STS). Very interesting for us here at Medical Museion because many of us work at the crossroads of medical humanities, science communication and science and technology studies. As the editors of the special issue say […]

Call for participants! Workshop on communicating medical materialities in March 2013

On the 8th-9th of march 2013, Medical Museion will host a workshop entitled ‘It’s Not What You Think – Communicating Medical Materialities’. The workshop builds from a central concern with materiality, asking what can be communicated about and through it. The workshop will be an experimental meeting place for a wide range of people interested […]

Sightseeing in Singapore, Museion Style

On a recent trip to Singapore to attend the IARU Graduate Research Conference I had the chance to visit a couple of museums. I didn’t get the chance to see all I would have liked to, but managed to check out two that I thought would be relevant to what we do here at the […]

Poppy’s milk so bitter, so sweet

Our own Jesper Vaczy Kragh has just reviewed Thomas Dormandy’s Opium: Reality’s Dark Dream (Yale UP) in yeasterday’s online issue of Times Higher Education: By tracing the early history of opium, Dormandy shows that drug addiction and prohibition are recent inventions. In classical antiquity, opium was praised by poets and priests, and even the medical oracle of the Roman […]

The inability of contextualism to explain disruptions and surprises

Last time I presented a paper criticising contextualist thinking was at the annual History of Science conference in Washington DC in November 2007 — that’s almost five years ago! I haven’t had much time over to think about the individualism/contextualism/holism issue. This museum, and a couple of kids, have taken all my time. But a […]

Deep lacerations, inflicted in the blink of an eye

One of the favourite topics in our museum discussions is ‘presence effects’, i.e., how close encounters with museum objects can convey other (and often deeper) kinds of experiences than those you get from reading a book or hearing a talk (see, e.g., Ken Arnold’s and my article in a recent issue of the journal Isis). Alistair […]

What does a scientist look like?

The traditional media image of what ‘a scientist’ looks like is pretty stereotypical, especially in film. The aim of the This Is What A Scientist Looks Like tumblr-site with the subtitle “Change the perception of who and what a scientist is or isn’t” is to overthrow “the overwhelming stereotype that science is conducted behind closed doors by unapproachable old, white […]

Boredom is unattractive — but maybe nonboredom is worse?

Always irritating,  but highly readable, Nicholas Carr quotes Clay Shirky saying: I remember, as a child, being bored. I grew up in a particularly boring place and so I was bored pretty frequently. But when the Internet came along it was like, “That’s it for being bored! Thank God! You’re awake at four in the morning? So […]
