Social media “likes” healthcare

Social media “likes” healthcare. This is the title of a recently launched report from PwC’s Health Research Institute (HRI). The subtitle; From marketing to social business, reveals that the report is focused on the role of social media in health care business. It does however have some interesting findings which are relevant also seen from […]

Some challenges of social media as a tool for public health science communication

Social media presents several advantages to public health science communication. But it would be wrong not to acknowledge that there are also challenges to the media. Below I have listed some of them. As with the advantages, I am sure there are many more challenges than those below, so please do add to the list […]

Some advantages of social media as a tool for public health science communication

The other day I blogged about some of the similarities I see between public health sciences and social media. Similarities which makes social media particular relevant for public health science communication. Apart from the similarities, I have been trying to put together a list of other advantages of social media for science communication, which I […]

All papers at PLoS Medicine now reflect the public Twitter debate

Last week, I wrote how several scientific journals and publishers are opening their eyes to Twitter. The confirmation of the relevance on Twitter also in relation to peer-reviewed journals comes in many different forms. This weekend, I came across a tweet giving another example : If you click on the link in the tweet (or […]

Materiality study group

For about two years now, a group of us here at the Museion has been running a reading group on materiality. It has been on a hiatus for a while, but we are now getting back into the swing of it. Traditionally, we meet on Monday mornings every 2-3 weeks to get the philosophical juices […]

Examine first, ask what it is later — comments on David Pantalony’s talk at Medical Museion

Yesterday, David Pantalony from University of Ottawa and the Canada Science and Technology Museum gave a talk in Medical Museion’s MUSE seminar series titled ‘Examine first, ask what it is later: The multiple interpretations of 20th century scientific artifacts’. David’s presentation gave rise to an intense discussion and an interesting stream of twitter-comments that are eternalised on Storify […]

A small treasure box of essays on social media and health from NEJM

Once again, Twitter uncovered for me a small treasure box on the web. By following a link in a tweet I found a box full of stories of how social media and medicine and public health can benefit from each other. The treasure box is part of the NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine) 200 […]

Assembling a toolkit for investigating overlooked spaces, objects, and bodies

At our next event on Thursday evening, accompanying the opening of new exhibition Experiences of Ageing, we’ll be inviting guests to investigate some of the overlooked aspects of medicine with their pen, lens, and hands. We’ll be exploring the quiet spaces that surround the drama of medical objects, everyday medical devices that are often ignored, […]

Why social media is particularly relevant for public health science communication

Social media is a gift to science communication. I am quite convinced about that. But is it particularly relevant for Public Health Science Communication? As many of the blog posts on this blog illustrates there is huge value and potential in using social media for public health science communication. And not only to disseminate research, […]
