Lessons from a witness seminar on the history of kidney transplantations in Denmark

The first witness seminar to be held in Denmark (at least to my knowledge!) was held last week at the Panum Institute. Nine Danish medical doctors, either retired or in the final years of their career, gathered to discuss the historical development of the therapeutic procedure that had been central to their professional activities, and […]

2nd Annual Symposium of the Postgraduate Life Sciences and Society Network, 14-17 January 2007, hosted by the Medical Museion The symposium will focus on how the recent biosciences challenge and reconfigure formerly stable categories: The social and the biological, the nature/culture dichotomy and the human/animal boundaries are increasingly blurred and become populated by hybrids, cyborgs […]

Workshop “Engineering Life: Narrationen vom Menschen in Biomedizin, Kultur und Literatur Workshop”, Greifswald, 24.-25. November 2006

Here’s another workshop that deals with one of the central issues for museums that try to make sense of recent biomedicine and biotechnology, viz. how humanness (“Menschsein”) is treated narratively in biomedicine and other cultural domains, like literature.

Animation of the inner life of the cell

I cannot really explain why I’m so fascinated with this eight-minute animation of molecular mechanisms within the cell? “The Inner Life of a Cell” was created for Harvard University biology students by XVIVO, a scientific animation company. Turn off the accompanying music-hall piano sound and enjoy the “slithering, gliding and twisting through 3D space”. There […]

Medical Museion organises witness seminar on the history of kidney transplantation in Denmark

Kidney transplantations are one of the most spectacular and controversial treatments in recent biomedicine. The history of kidney transplantations are one of the areas studies in the framework of the “Recent Danish Biomedicine”-project at Medical Museion, and in order to include not only written sources and archival material in this study, we have invited ten doctors to participate in a witness seminar on the subject.

Garage biomedical technology

Remember Michael Crichton’s science fiction thriller Prey (2002)? In which the bad guys created swarms of nanorobots, and the good guy lost his wife (but saved his kids) in his struggle to counter the swarms that left their secret lab environment somewhere in the Nevada desert to start replicating in a Darwinian fashion and thus […]

The history of everyday lab artefacts

We tend to think of recent biomedical artefacts as more or less spectacular high-tech things, like gene sequencers, PET scanners, PCR machines or knock-out mice. But many vital artefacts in the biomedical laboratory or medical clinic are mundane things — like plastic gloves, ink markers and centrifuge tubes. They may not be so fancy, but […]
